The names Sampler and I have just been recruited. I thought I'd just introduce myself.. Im 17 irl, (as of 6 days ago) and I'm looking forward to DFO, as I'm sure you all are.

MMOS i've played in the past, are runescape (oh help me, lord), Conquer Online, and I played the WoW trial (but stopped after feeling sick for days). Something i forgot to mention in my application was that I played Diaspora. I'd be surprised if anyone knew what that was, but it was apparently a milestone for online gaming.

I just know niggerniggerniggerniggerniggerniggerniggernigger will restore god's trust in me, after playing such sinful games.

I have seen you guys are playing rune, and I have just downloaded it. You may see me on there some time soon.

2. Go all out, and deny the mofo, because there is no god, no matter what you think.

I guess I will scrape together a third possibility, from the scraps at the bottom of the barrel, avoiding the two extremes (thats right, being considerate is an extreme).

I really disagree with people who take religion literally, and believe there is a god. I don't know whether Jesus existed or not, but if he did, it is unlikely at best, that he was the messenger of god (or whatever he is supposed to be, sorry for my ignorance, i haven't read the bible).
It seems clear to me, though, that religion was created for the simple reason of teaching morals and a lot of these morals shaped the western society.

So, in the long run, I have nothing against the people who made this bullshit up, but the people who take it literally need to take a step back.

(obviously I am using christianity as the base of my argument, because I know even less about others)

I disagree Rufus. If it was not for the protestant reformation that led to the formation of groups such as the Calvinist we would potentially not be here today talking on the internet and enjoying a modern capitalistic economy (which has its own evils). If it was not for their dogged determination to work in callings to prove to themselves their own state of grace then we may not have the Spirit of Capitalism as we do today (as Weber put it).

This lack of the Spirit of Capitalism would in turn not have lead to the industrial revolution which was brought about by the need for maximum efficiency from said protestant groups. The technological advances we sit upon today may very well could have been a mud hole without Organized religion.

It was organized religion that caused the many holywars of the past, which led to the destruction of alot of knowledge and the collapse of the first large empires which had achieved these things. The most famous loss of knowledge would be the Library of Alexandria which set us back a good couple hundred years technology wise... Lets look at the roman empire pre-catholicism. The were a vast empire, and though there was religion, we could hardly call the roman religion very well organized. Yet the society and culture flourished. Lets look at China before they fucked themselves with wars. They had the first gunpowder munitions used in warfare, and achieved many great things. Their downfall was politcal more than anything else, but they had no real organized religion outside of the often secluded shaolin monostaries. Japan has never had an organized religion, just a collection of thoughts, ideas, and rituals that got passed on from generation to generation through families. This in general was called shinto. Was it organized? Sure, it had it's monks which were keepers of knowledge, but they weren't priests or preachers damning you to hell if you didn't do stuff right. Japan is a thriving nation that has surpassed america and europe in many technological endeavors. Do we have nationwide DSL thats 10x faster than cable internet? No. Do we have nationwide coverage with all cellphone carriers? Hell no, I can drive 20 miles to the west of me and have my signal die.

I honestly think that organized religion isn't needed for a society to function, grow, and prosper.
