I can't stress how important learning skills are! As boring as they seem, you get double learning speed up until about 1.6Mil SP's so you might as well grind these out before anything else.
I promise you, if you don't do the learning skills, those that do will soon out strip you in terms of viable PVP/Ship skills in a matter of weeks.

skip the level 5 learning skills. takes around a year to make up for the time it takes to go from lvl 4 to 5.

Don't train literally in this order, or else you'll go insane with boredom, learn new skills here and there, expirement with stuff you want to try out. Try picking up some new combat skills like missiles or something.
We should totally have a frigate deathmatch tourney or some team games.

Downloaded the trial already, just never logged in...
I know dick about the game... Is there a place where I can find out what race bonus / ships like so I can find one... and maybe one that tells me what is better to use... long/short/med ... What weapons I should be striving for....
I usually play a mage... so something I guess with long range kick ass DPS with some good defence/utility.....

you're in a spaceship shooting lasers. you'll be starting with the small guns. later you can specialize sniping from afar. it's completely different though... hard to think "mage"
you can also go logistics later, though, so maybe that's a decent equivalent...

Not sure I like any of the races to fit my style...
Caldari- probably my first choice at the moment. Nice shields, good for long range. missle heavy.. but slow and it doesn't seem missles are nearly as good as other weapons? Since they are slow they are hard to stay in long range....
Minmatar - fast ship for hit and run, but easly destroyed.....
Gallente - nice damage and shit at close range, decent tanks. Slow ships and hard to get into range for PvP. Plus the most shit to learn to use correctly.. Probably my second choice....
Amarr - weak hulls and shields... but have good damage at any range, normal speed.
So, that is how I see them... not sure the reality in game though.

Okay, I'll get started soon (probably won't play much until after exams though) mostly to get some skills trained and ready before I really get involved. Basically, in MMO's I usually do my best in a support role (I started off as a healer and have always ended up gravitating toward that). I need you, Stalwart, as EVE commander, to tell me what I should do and what race and history setup would be best for it.

this game is exactly like all other fantasy MMOs. Mana -> capacitor, spells -> guns, ammo ->reagents, gun/hull/other upgrades -> sword/armor/trinket, etc.
and drones are kind of like this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sR5k8S4hLCg

wait. what? my minmatar jaguar isn't easily destroyed by any means, and amarr has some of the best armor tank around. in apocrypha, amarr was the race to be flying.
and you might regret those "nice shields" that the caldari has. you're putting way too much thought into the race. if you'd like to go to the amarr race and fly caldari ships, you can easily log into the game as amarr and pick up the caldari frigate book if you'd like to go down that line. it's only like an hour and a half of skill that they start you off with, and you really should shy away from trying to specialize too much in the first month anyway.
learning skills are the important ones, and when those are done, you'll be more educated regarding the game and know which one to go after.

go amarr or caldari as that's what i have equipment setups for. like i've said before, log in, do the tutorial, run some of the capsuleer/military career path missions, and then get to torrinos. pick up the tier 1 learning skills (they are on the market under Skills --> Learning --> the cheap ones. there are 5) on the way if you can afford the 500k or whatever it is.

Got my info from http://www.eve-wiki.net/index.php?title=Main_Page
minmatar
General Strengths
Very fast. Minmatar ships are often able to dictate the range at which combat takes place, and so can evade being damaged as they orbit their targets. Tend toward light vessels, making microwarpdrives and afterburners very effective.
Good amount of medium slots to mount Electronic Warfare and MWD/AB modules. Often have enough low slots to armor tank.
Projectile weapons are highly versatile, as they are able to load different damage types for different situations. High single-shot of artillery lends itself well to hit-and-run tactics made possible by ships' high speeds.
Electronic Warfare ships have bonuses to target painters, although these are highly situational.
General Weaknesses
Tend to have weaker tanks than other factions
Skill-intensive. It may be necessary to train projectile weapon, missile and drone skills to obtain the maximum firepower out of Minmatar ships.
Vulnerable to ECM jamming (use relatively weak LADAR-based sensors)
Small capacitor reservoirs
Tend to have very weak hulls
amarr
General Strengths
Exceptional armor tankers, with the thickest armor and best resistances of the four playable factions
Tend to have large number of low slots for armor repairers, but this also means you can fit a large number of speed modules such as overdrive injectors. This can result in speeds which even overtake comparable Minmatar ships, although at a cost.
Capacitor bonuses to laser use mean Amarr ships can wield them for allowable periods, and many ships have other bonuses to laser weapons. Some ships have short-range missiles bonuses.
Tend to have very large capacitor reservoirs (slightly better than Gallente), although lasers drain capacitor quickly
EWAR ships receive bonuses to tracking disruptors
General Weaknesses
In a sense, many Amarr ships are missing turret bonuses that the equivalent ship of a different race would have. This is because many Amarr ships have (at level 5 skills) a 50% capacitor use reduction to laser weapons, making lasers usable, but not more powerful. They still get damage and re-fire bonuses, but not as many.
Typically have small number of medium slots, meaning EW and AB/MWD usage is compromised. Many Amarr ships are unable to perform roles such as tackling to the degree that other factions' ships are able.
Ships are often expensive compared to other factions.
Relatively weak hulls and rather thin shields
Often slower base max velocities than comparable ships of other factions

I think all the races have a frigate that has a decent sized cargo hold (for a frigate). The Caldari one is a Bantam. But I mean, it's like maybe 1000m3 with 2 cargo expanders. And it's slow for a frigate.
