Basically I have made it my mission to test all the different materials and see how they affect different aspects of the weapon. so far i have tests pig iron, steel and tungsteel by making the same weapon 3 times but with different blade materials. (one handed blade handle type 1 - firmwood, short sword blade type 1)
Results:
Pigiron: 8 swings - 13 damage to head (unarmoured)
Steel: 8 swings - 21 damage to head (unarmoured)
Tungsteel: 8 swings - 22 damage to head (unarmoured)
So from these results it would appear Tungsteel is the best material but it probably makes more sense to make your weapons out of sreel due to the fact you can gather it alot more quickly and theres only 1 damage point in it.
Of course its still very early beta and this will probably all change but it gives me something to do.

Nyx: 22 swings! - 18 damage to head (unarmoured)
You get a hell of alot of swings from nyx weapons but they do slightly less damage than steel or tungsteel. Definatly worth it if you are good at dodging enemy attacks and can drain their stamina. Infact if you left even a slight pause inbetween your swings i think you would be able to swing continually and never run out of stamina.

How to be pro like Thatcher.
Step 1 - Make yourself a set of steel plate armor.
Step 2 - Make a Greatsword with a Maalite Blade
Step 3 - Inflict 30-34 damage per hit against armored targets, while getting 8 swings per stamina bar.
Step 4 - PROFIT

and your gonna have to make it all over again thatcher cause they wiped the chars. Plus mobs dont seem to be dropping stuff at the moment so you can't make armour.

It does say you can't use it to it's full extent (60str), but hell, I can swing it 5 times so who cares? Killing Terrorbirds and Wisents before they even have a change of attacking you back is awesome. One/Two hitting people ain't that bad either.
Also, a one handed alternative: Use the same materials but use One handed weapon type 3 and Side Blade type 2 for a 26 damage (I think it was 26) low stamina draining one hander that hits fucking fast and has somewhat long reach.

I have a lv3 copper refine (cuprum goes to bron and bron goes to tindramenic somethingorother) sword and it deals roughly the same damage as steel but is much lighter.

I was using this this morning. 26 against non armor, 20 against armor if i remember correctly, but I easily got off 20 swings. I still prefer two handers, and the other guy hit me for 34 with a 2hander and I couldnt get in on him fast enough to matter.

Imagine running around as a nigger (not like a Barack Obama nigger, a full blooded niggerniggerniggerniggernigger as night completely African NIGGER) wearing noob clothes that closely resemble a dress weilding two swords cutting a white man's head off then saying "wheres my reparations honkey???". Plus you get to kill image which is always hilarious, forced one into mercy mode and he called me a dicksucker so I FUCKING ENDED HIM.
This game will be golden if they iron out the bugs and get it stable. Also fun is being a dark as night tiny niggerniggerniggerniggernigger man and getting a bow, hiding in the bushes and sniping noobs with it. They can't see you worth shit because you can literally be ink niggerniggerniggerniggernigger with very tiny eyes. It's like fucking predator.
Weirdest thing is that they have a language filter yet you can run around naked showing your flaccid uncircumcised penis to everyone.

I had a 1 handed spear and a shield which i quite liked. it was quite cool because when i pulled my spear back for a jab it would bring my shield up with my spear just over the top of it.
The shield was bad ass cause it was steel with a gold skull on it but i attacked someone and the shaft of my 1h spear changed into a 2h spear shaft and even the spear head mesh changed. and then my shield dissapeared from the face of the earth. I actually found my spear back in the bank though =/

On the topic of spears: They are apparently awesome. They have long fucking with stab attacks and they hit for pretty good amounts as well. That is, you can pretty much hit someone double the distance away you normally could with a sword, which is pretty useful.
Haven't really tested spears yet, but I fought with a guy that had one and boy was he a bitch to kill. Gonna test it once the servers goes up.

yes they are really nice espeically as the weapons have knock back. everytime someone charges me i just jab them in the face and they miss their attack on the knock back. I personaly think a 1handed spear and a shield is really cool (espeically on a niggerniggerniggerniggernigger), it's like being a zulu.
I saw some guy witha 2 handed spear who was hitting people at double the length of the weapons mesh, i dunno if he was really laggy or it's just bugged. But yeah spears and cool, mine is just firm wood shaft and nyx spear head and it hits for like 22.

Spears are excellent for long distance attacks but if they block/dodge your initial jab and get in close it's pretty much over. Thatcher has a hardon over some dude with a spongewood/maalite 1h spear because it was ultra light so you could sit and jab with it all day without losing stam. Personally, I've killed a few spearmen using my dual wield setup, dodge the first attack then get in and punish them, since it only takes a few hits to kill people mistakes are easily punished, with lethal results.
I do like the combat in this game though, so unlike niggerniggerniggerniggerniggerniggerniggernigger taking 50 hits to kill someone. Nakeds die to 2-3 hits, armor lets you survive 10 or so tops from what I've seen, though there are probably really good armors that I've yet to see, like a 4.0 material Maalite suit not to mention all of the crazy metals they've yet to add.
Also you can't accurately shoot a bow while at full sprint, someone was trying to niggerniggerniggerniggerniggerniggerniggernigger bow me so I dodged his wildly shot arrows then came back around and chopped him up with my swords. He called me a bitch and I replied with "STEP BACK HONKY".
Next time MO goes up I'm going to macro mine some more copper until Thatcher shows me where the maalite rock is. I'm saving up the extra gold and silver to make a golden claymore with a silver handle.

Here are some questions that won't really be answered for another month or two...
I know you will hate me for this, and I hate myself for it as well, but spears remind me too god damn much like the polearms from DF. What's the downside of using a spear instead of a sword? Also, what are the other weapons implemented.
Also, with the crafting in the game, what's going to prevent 'flavor of the week/month' weapons? I know the ability to vary the used materials allow for customization, but the Dev team is going to need luck and a lot of skill to get the balance between everything right, which isn't the goal really so much as to have a variety of viable weapons players can select from.
It would also be pretty bad ass to make it so players should have more than the normal 1 or 2 sets of weapons on them just to counteract unusual encounters with other players or even world mobs.

Well for starters the spears don't do much damage unless you jab with them which requires accuracy opposed to niggerniggerniggerniggerniggerniggerniggernigger pole arms which were mainly good because off the huge arc swing. And if you got a shield you can block it (when i get "perfect blocks" i only take like 3 damage) and you can double tap a direction to make a small jump in that direction. I can imagine that being very usefull against spear users as you could jump to the side avoiding the jab and still pushing up close to them. The shaft and the head of weapons actually have seperate hit boxes. So if some one is too close you, you will hit them with the shaft doing much less damage (unless you use a jab which is harder to hit with)
I really think the weapon you use will be dependant on your playstyle. Obviously there will never be perfect balance but the game is quite skill based so using a weapon that suites your play style will be much more important.

What's needed, is an organic crafting mechanic that produces analogue weapons, varying in quality/damage, so that even weapons which are made from shit, can compete with advanced materials, if the weapon is crafted to the highest quality.
Right now, the crafting system makes me sick with how simplistic it is.
Maybe it's just beta, maybe everything will be fine in retail - But then, I said the same thing about DF.

People in game, correct me if you have experimented enough to know what to correct.
What Omley posted suggests that the weapons are actually varied in the they are used, this is the basis, or foundation, of true customization in weapons.
Like how with the spear, if swung in an arc, if the opponent inside of the arc of the head, they will take significantly less damage. Otherwise the reach on the spear is enormous, so if the player wielding the spear has a good sense of timing, can use the spear to the best of it's abilities. It does more damage for the stam it uses, but it's hard to target.
Swords seem to have a shorter reach, use about the same amount of stam, but have slightly less damage output, but once in range, are much swifter to making blocking and dodging a difficult to time correctly for the opponent.
Both of these have their own play styles, but it's up to the player to decide what they're best with.
To further the customization, one can use various materials to benefit yourself, but any changes from materials is only secondary, it's the WEAPON that makes the biggest and thus deciding differences, not the materials.
Also it is true that the best, most well crafted cheapy weapons could be on par with regular/shitty made upper weapons, that just means that the best most well made upper weapons are still better than the best cheapies. It just comes down to your personal skill as well as what you have the resources to replace and thus are willing to sacrifice to the fortunes of battle.
(Resources meaning gathering labor from both other players as well as from the enviroment.)

They have yet to balance all the weapon damage and etc. As you might notice, you always hit for the same amount of damage, I'm suspecting this isn't the way the game will handle the damage output later. You've might also have noticed that mobs always deals the exact same damage, no matter if you have armor on or not. I'm hoping they have high priority on these things so that we can test the "real" combat system.
Also, in combat beta I've heard that you could hold a 2 hand sword + shield at the same time, this was apparently called "Sparta Mode" and could only be used by the strongest. This was in fact not a bug, but for some reason it has yet to be implanted in the beta.
They are basically trying to get everything to just work at the moment.
I am sure balancing will come in a few months.
Overall this beta has given me some hope that indie developers can get shit done. Let's just hope that they don't get full of themselves and sit on their high horse like TACOS.
Also, we need to make a mandatory negro/spear clan. END OF.

And we haven't even seen the "real" crafting system yet. Right now we just have NPCs doing everything. It will be a lot more interesting when actual people do this stuff.

It's possible they're just some random prop rocks but I doubt it.

Yeah i found those too it's not them. you just keep following the mountain. When it gets to the end of the range just keeping following the last mountain round untill you are basically on the other side of the mountaon range and keep going and you will see it eventually. You can't miss it really.

Oh btw guys.. Dobblewood (or whattever it was called, don't really remember... Found them last patch) is perfect for bows. Perhaps the best tree for bows.

- Err, but that was one of the main reasons why I liked MO; the fact that you didn't have to grind weapon skill, just to compete in PvP :confused:

WELL NOW YOU DO. But in fairness it doesn't really take very long to get weapon skill mines at like 40 just from attacking random people the past 2 days.
I think they will balance the skills more.
