Free is only used in this to entice people to buy the game. You see 'free' anything and it makes you slightly more likely to buy the game, even if they just include the overhead and profit they normally would make on it by adding the price to something else you would get with it.

Basically it's like the mathematical equations. If one piece of a complex or simple equation is false, the entire thing is false. So if your buyone one product, but they're giving you a bunch of 'free' stuff with it if you buy it, that free stuff isn't free since you had to buy something to get it.

So technically we are paying for the first month, it's just included in the total cost. But the same can be said for all other MMO's since this is the normal practice. Meaning that the comparison of the price of MO is still inflated when next to the prices of more other MMO's.

AoC, I think, wanted to sell their game through third parties. Like Walmart or Target, Gamespot, w/e. MO is shipping it themselves, bypassing those people, so that the 'world' doesn't get a chance to say 'No, we wont sell it.' since they'll never get a hold of it in the first place.
